Prix De La Photographie announces competition winners

Prix De La Photographie, better known as Px3, had an immensely successful second year of its annual photography competition, having received thousands of incredible entries. Judging in categories in Advertising, Photojournalism, Photographic Books, Fine Art, Nature, and Portraiture, along with numerous sub-categories, the panel selected a First and Second place winner in each. Entries were judged on the basis of originality, creativity, the quality of execution, and overall impact on the viewer. What's more, the People's Choice Award is still open for voting.

The title of Px3 Photographer of the Year was given to Balasz Gardi of Hungary, and his single image "The Valley" was highlighted for particular recognition. The Best New Talent Award went to Ryan Schude of Los Angeles, with his image "The Saturn" also receiving distinct praise. These two photographers, along with the First and Second Place winners in each category, will be featured at the Galerie Acte 2 in Paris June 26-28, 2008, and published in the Px3 Annual Book. Pictures of the Year International honors Leaders in Photojournalism

The Pictures of the Year International (POYi) competition has conferred a special award this year, bestowing the Distinguished Leadership in PhotoJournalism Award upon Magnum Founders: In Celebration of Sixty Years, a hard-cover, limited edition book of platinum prints celebrating the work of pioneering photographers who have come to help define modern photography. The book was submitted by Verso Limited Editions, and a special award was bestowed. Eleven highly esteemed professionals reviewed more than 46,00 images for the competition, and were all amazed by the presentation and quality of Magnum Founders.

The distinction is shared among Verso Limited Editions, Magnum Photos, and Magnum founders (and photographic legends) Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, and David Seymour. Verso specializes in hand-crafted books in the traditional style, in an attempt to emulate the rare first editions of the 1900s from artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Salvador Dali.

"Seventy-five editions of Magnum Founders are being produced, each containing twelve bound, original 14 x 16 inch platinum prints, three by each photographer, as well as one freestanding platinum print by Robert Capa. The images selected for the book are some of the most important of these photographers' careers, and each print bears the stamp of the photographer's estate. The Cartier-Bresson prints in Magnum Founders are the only estate-stamped prints released for sale since his death in 2004.

"Commissioned by Magnum Photos, the book was published in cooperation with the estates of the four photographers and contains a foreword by Elliott Erwitt, renowned photographer and past president of Magnum Photos."

CALL FOR ENTRIES: The New Orleans Darkroom

The New Orleans Darkroom proudly presents the Emerging Photographer 2008 show, juried by living photography legend Herman Leonard, and open to all themes and genres. Five young photographers will be chosen for the award: an exhibition at The Darkroom and promotion on the official website. Entry fee is $45 for five images. These five images are the ones to be displayed at the exhibition, and the five photographers' exhibitions run together at The Darkroom Gallery in New Orleans' Garden District, opening October 4, 2008.

There is an age cap on applicants (must be born no earlier than October 1, 1973), and the five images submitted must have a coherent theme. This competition seems aimed to the flickr generation, with its emphasis on smaller photo-sets. To see great photographers such as Leonard fostering the recognition of such young talent through connections spanning generations is truly encouraging. Expect to see more competitions of this kind in the future, where these restrictions, perhaps seen as confining to more venerable photographers, will act to shape the pool of entrants.

"Herman Leonard is one of America's foremost fine art and commercial photographers, with a career spanning six decades. An apprentice of Yousuf Karsh, Leonard developed an instantly recognizable style of portraiture with jazz musicians as his subjects. His icons of American photography are displayed in museums around the globe and his entire collection is housed in The Smithsonian Institution's permanent archives."

Also, starting May 17, 2008, The Darkroom will present "Abstractions in the Landscape," a juried exhibition of photographs selected by Sandra Russell Clark, at The Darkroom's Lower Garden District showroom. CALL FOR ENTRIES: Photography(book)now

An international symposium and celebration of fine art photography books, Photography(book)now is inviting photographers to submit their own books for a chance to be recognized at related events all over the world, as well as a $25,000 grand prize, bestowed to assist a chosen photographer in the competition and self-publishing of his or her book. A panel of recognized experts in the field are on board to give the winners added prestige and recognition in the fine art photography world. What's more, the seven top winners will be invited to attend the competition awards ceremony in San Francisco, CA, on September 12, 2008.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Blow-Up

Blow-Up, a national competition for photography and photo-based media, is seeking submissions for its juried exhibition to be held from July 10 to August 23, 2008, at Bromfield Gallery in Boston, MA. Juried by New York-based photographer and educator Harvey Stein, the competition invites fresh, original interpretations of the theme: literal explosions, photographic enlargement, temper tantrums, inflatables, and any other play on words one can, and should, imagine. Even the movie with the same title, Blow Up (see below comment for clarification; even I make mistakes—ed) is ripe for reinterpretation. Entry fee is $30 for five jpg-format images.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Canon Photography in the Parks Photo Contest

Canon U.S.A. has done more than pay lip service to Earth Day, evidenced by its new recycling programs and outreach incentives, as well as its third annual Canon Photography in the Parks competition. Established to encourage American photographers of every stripe to take an active creative interest in the nation's parks, this call for entries can be entered at the Canon Digital Learning Center. Prizes include Canon EOS series SLRs, earth-friendly Pixma Pro9500 Photo printers, and a Grand Prize trip for two to any participating national or state park.
The deadline for submissions is September 30, 2008.

To enter, one must be 13 years or older (the minimum age range has been extended), and an amateur photographer. According to Canon, Professionals include those who received more than 51 percent income from photography sales in the last three years, and are not eligible for submission. Registration and uploading can be completed at the Canon Digital Learning Center web site here. There are no entry fees.

The Center For Fine Art Photography announces two juried exhibitions

The Center for Fine Art Photography has announced two new Calls for Entry for photographers looking to submit in the summer season of 2008. The first, the 2008 International Exhibition of Fine Art Photography, will be juried by Hossein Farmani, Founder of the Lucie Awards, and will accept traditional, contemporary, avant-garde, experimental and mixed-media works. The second, Our Environment, the Good, Bad and the Ugly, has as its theme the footprint of human expansion and development on our earth. Both competitions are open to all mediums, techniques, and levels of experience.

Entries for the International Exhibition of Fine Art Photography are due July 15, 2008. Entries for Our Environment, the Good, Bad and the Ugly, are due August 18, 2008.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Focal Press Monthly Photography Contest

The March winners of the Focal Press Monthly Photography contest have just been announced, and are currently accepting entries for the April Competition, "Photojournalism: Photos that Inspire." Entry is free and available to any photographer. The April competition is sponsored by Kenneth Kobre, author of Photojournalism: The Professionals' Approach, 6th Edition. Winners announced for The Singular Image and Project Competition

Center, the partner organization of Santa Fe Workshops, has announced the winners for their annual Project Competition and The Singular Image Awards. Hiroshi Watanabe's photographic project, "Ideology in Paradise," took top honors in the Project Competition, as did color photographer Dorthe Alstrup and black-and-white artist Joseph Guerriero in the Singular Image Awards' two categories. Congratulations also to the Juror's Choice recipients in the Project Competition, Walter Astrada, Dean Hollowood, and Marvi Lacar; selected Singular Image color entrants Kathryn Parker and Brad Moore (Second and Third Place, respectively); and entrants of Singular Image's Black and White category, Anna Boyiazis and Bob Gates.

The winning projects were chosen by a jury comprising Charlotte Cotton, Curator of Photography, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); Chris Pichler, Publisher at Nazraeli Press; and Susan Scandrett, Creative Director of Mother Jones magazine.

"We unanimously selected work that demonstrated active choices made by the photographer to represent what was of genuine interest to them. This is reflected in the range of our selections and the range of contemporary concerns. Leica European Publishers Award now open for entries

From March 1 to 21, 2008, Leica will be accepting book entries for the prestigious Leica European Publishers Award, which is open to photographers worldwide and is brought to us through a collaboration of seven European publishers. Submitted projects must be in the form of a finished photographic book with substance that has never been published. The winning entry will be published by each participating publisher and released to audiences in each respective country. An entry fee of 50 Euro covers the cost of returned materials.

Participating publishers include Actes Sud of France, Apeiron of Greece, Dewi Lewis Publishing of Britain, Edition Braus of Germany, Lunwerg Editores of Spain, Mets & Schilt of The Netherlands, and Peliti Associati of Italy. The chance for publication in so many languages, right off the bat, is a great opportunity for professional photographers ready to break into markets all over Europe. Last year's winning entry, "As I Was Dying," by Paolo Pellegrin, has just been released by award participants Dewi Lewis. This book captures moving (and often brutal) images of human tragedy and suffering. The horrors of war is the main subject in Pellegrin's photographs, and the vulnerable families and disadvantaged communities that inevitably are caught in the middle. CALL FOR ENTRIES: Los Angeles Center for Digitial Art

The Los Angeles Center for Digitial Art (LACDA)'s annual "Top 40" Competition will be accepting entries for the juried exhibition, which will take place April 10 to May 3, 2008. Entrants are invited to submit three works of original photography and/or digital media, saved as .jpeg format. All styles and mediums involving some kind of digital process in the creation of images are acceptable, as are entries from anywhere in the world. 40 selected finalists will receive one print (of up to 24x36) to be mounted and displayed at the juried exhibition.

Registration fee is $30.Multiple entries are permitted, so long as the appropriate fee is paid. Deadline for entries is March 20, 2008.

"Many artists from this exhibit continue their relationship with LACDA for exhibit in solo shows, exhibits curated outside of LACDA and exhibit in art and photo fairs where LACDA participates. All entries are given special consideration for exhibiting at LACDA and outside exhibitions where we are featured."

UnScene San Francisco features city's merging photographers

A collaboration between W San Francisco Hotel, 944 Magazine, and the UnScene Photography Tour presents UnScene San Francisco, a celebration of San Francisco's emerging photographers and gallery exhibition. This is only one stop in a multi-city event, comprising exhibitions in Dallas, New Orleans, San Diego, and New York, to name a few. Each juried event will feature five local artists, the top rated of which will receive a solo exhibition at a local gallery: in this case Jack Fischer Gallery. All events are held at participating W Hotels. The event will take place March 19, 2008, at W San Francisco.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Galore!

No less than four calls for entry are now open to photographers. "Abstractions in the Landscape," at The Darkroom in New Orleans, is inviting submissions of non-representational urban and/or natural landscapes. "Railway Reflections," an international railroad art exhibition, is seeking one hundred works to be displayed in at the Nevada State Library Gallery in Carson City, NV. The Art of Photography Show is still accepting entries, with the exhibition taking place at the Lyceum Theatre Gallery in Historic San Diego, CA. Last but not least, Communication Arts magazine is now accepting entries for their 49th Photography Competition, with the winners to be published in the August 2008 Photography Annual.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: New York Photo Awards 2008

Starting February 1, 2008, the New York Photo Awards will be accepting entries from photographers all over the world, in the search for exciting new work that breaks new ground and challenges common perception. The awards, introduced during the New York Photo Festival, will give participants the opportunity to interact with key experts and decision-makers in the photographic, editorial, fine art, and fashion communities. The New York Photo Awards ceremony will take place May 16, 2008. Only works in the fields of photography, multimedia photography, and multimedia video, produced or published between December 1st, 2006 and January 31st, 2008 are eligible for submission.

Submissions will be accepted until April 14, 2008.

NEW CALLS FOR ENTRY: The Center for Fine Art Photography

The Center for Fine Art Photography has announced new calls for entry: The Society for Photographic Education (SPE) Show, for SPE members, will exhibit 50 chosen photographs in the Center's online gallery. Ten final photographers will be selected from the fifty to have their works exhibited at the Center's gallery space in Fort Collins, Colorado. Also, a chosen photographer will have his or her work exhibited in a two-page portfolio spread in a future issue of CameraArts! What's more, The Center for Fine Art Photography has also announced The Artful Nude, juried by none other than Kim Weston. Along with the ever-considerable cash awards, participants have a chance to be selected for a $300 workshop award, applicable towards Mr. Weston's Workshop, to be held August 1-4 in Fort Collins. Free Competition at the Palm Springs Photo Festival

The Palm Springs Photo Festival Slide Show Contest, a free contest for which the chosen photographers will be presented four at a time for every evening of the festival at The Palm Springs Art Museum, is entry fee-free. Awards include a Canon Professional Pixma Printer and a $300 Gift Certificate from Samy’s Camera, and Lowepro Camera Bags and $50 gift certificates from the chosen finalist from each evening. CALL FOR ENTRIES: The Art of Photography Show

The Art of Photography Show 2008, an international exhibition of fine art photography, will take place April 25 to May 23, 2008. The show will be hosted once again at the Lyceum Theatre Gallery in the historic Gaslamp Quarter of Downtown San Diego. Applying for the competition is as simple as filling out an online registration form and uploading .jpgs of photographic art. Images created using any medium will be accepted, whether it is by film, digital media (with photographic elements, of course), alternative processes, montages, and so on. $5,000 in cash prizes will be awarded at a world-class opening ceremony. Entry fees are $25 for the initial entry, and $10 for each additional.

The Center for Fine Art Photography to cut the tape on new facility

The Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado has announced the expected opening date for their new facility. On February 1, 2008, doors will be opened next door to the Poudre River Art Center, which is home to resident artists' galleries.Also, the F-stop Cafe (too scary to be a coincidence!) offers an outdoor pavillion all furthering the artistic enjoyment for visitors.

Remember, there's still plenty of competitions to enter at the Center for Fine Art Photography's website. The deadline of first competition, Street Photography, is tomorrow, so get those photos in! It's as easy as hooking your digital camera up and importing the pictures—images made by any camera or process are welcome!

Guggenheim Museum Announces Shortlist for the Hugo Boss Prize 2008

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Hugo Boss AG have announced the shortlist for the bienniel Hugo Boss Prize for 2008. Established in 1996 to recognize significant achievement in contemporary art, The Hugo Boss Prize is juried by an international panel of museum directors, curators, and critics. The award has become an integral part of the Guggenheim's contemporary art program, acknowledging talented artists who push past the ordinarily conceived barriers between mediums.

From The Guggenheim:

"The finalists for 2008 include Swiss artist Christoph Buchel, for Installations, as well as film, sculpture, and printed materials; American photographer and performance artist Patty Chang, for performance, photography, video, and sculpture; American photographer Sam Durant,for installations, photography, sculpture, drawing, and video; Palestinian photographer Emily Jacir, for film, photography, installation, performance, video, writing, and sound; Danish photographer Joachim Koester, for installations of film and photography; and Swiss artist Roman Signer, for sculpture, installations, and films."

A publication featuring work and essays from all six finalists will be released in June 2008.
