AUCTION: Daniel Cooney presents photographs, photographic literature

Daniel Cooney's Early Spring Fine Art Auction has only a few more days before its close on Thursday, March 6, 2008. The lots are divided into photography, photographic literature, and painting categories. Daniel Cooney is holding this auction in conjunction with igavel.com, a partnership that occurs three times a year. As always, a preview of available lots is taking place at the exhibition space in New York City. None of the selections in this auction have been solicited from individual artists, thus creating a collection of images that stand fully on their own merit, in which the contest is decided by those at the helm of the auction.

CALL FOR ENTRIES: New York Photo Awards 2008

Starting February 1, 2008, the New York Photo Awards will be accepting entries from photographers all over the world, in the search for exciting new work that breaks new ground and challenges common perception. The awards, introduced during the New York Photo Festival, will give participants the opportunity to interact with key experts and decision-makers in the photographic, editorial, fine art, and fashion communities. The New York Photo Awards ceremony will take place May 16, 2008. Only works in the fields of photography, multimedia photography, and multimedia video, produced or published between December 1st, 2006 and January 31st, 2008 are eligible for submission.

Submissions will be accepted until April 14, 2008.

"All Award Winners and Honorable Mentions will enjoy unprecedented visibility for their work. In addition to the New York Photo Awards ceremony, their work will be showcased on the New York Photo Awards and New York Photo Festival websites, and published in leading photo magazines. These artists are also automatically eligible for inclusion in a beautifully produced New York Photo Awards Annual by powerHouse Books. The Annual will be published in November 2008."

Entry Categories include, for professionals: Editorial; Personal Work/ Unpublished/ Fine Art; Advertising; Books; and Multimedia. Student Categories: Editorial; Personal Work/Unpublished; Books; and Multimedia. Entry fees for professionals are $30 per photograph; $90 per published book, catalog, editorial, or any other periodical; and $75 per multimedia selection. Entry fees for students are $10 per photograph; $50 per 12-image portfolio; and $45 per multimedia submission.

Bill Armstrong at ClampArt

A photographic project that has been underway for more than ten years—Bill Armstrongs' "Infinity" series—will be exhibted at ClampArt in New York City. The series of new images, dubbed "Renaissance," was created by the capture of found images with an out-of-focus lens. The setting of the lens is placed at infinity, hence the title of the larger project. Bill Armstrong uses master drawings from the Renaissance and presents them in vivid color. The human figures featured in Armstrong's images reflect the state of the human condition as they are locked in dramatic, sometimes ambiguous poses.

The exhibition runs until February 17, 2007. This is Armstrong's third exhibition at ClampArt. The photographer has been exhibiting all over the world for 25 years, and is represented in the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard, The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Musée de l'Eysée in Lausanne, and Centro Internazionale di Fotografia, among others. His images in "Renaissance" comprise the interest in the self and humanity that characterized much of the art and learning of the 15th century along with a focus on the ongoing spirit of discovery, fueled by a universal creative energy.

Aperture Events of the Holiday Season

Aperture Foundation has offered fine art photography books, travelling exhibitions and high-quality educational programs in New York and beyond since 1952, and this tradition continues well into the 21st century with new opportunities to engage in the world of photography both classic and cutting-edge. On November 28, 2007 at The Strand on Broadway, Richard Misrach will give a talk and sign copies of his landmark new work, On the Beach, which will be Aperture's largest book yet. On December 3, Sylvia Plachy, long-time photographer for The New Yorker, will discuss Goings On About Town: Photographs for The New Yorker. Never-before-seen images from the photographer's prolific career will be on display at the event.

"Plachy, who is well known to New Yorkers for her long-standing photo column at the Village Voice entitled 'Unguided Tour,' explores the city’s dynamics from the inside out, revealing the vital and at times wacky creativity that energizes New York around the clock. The images are quintessentially Sylvia Plachy, and quintessentially New York. Plachy will also show and discuss other images from her illustrious 40-year career."

Plachy's photographic journey began in Budapest, where she was born, and she has taken pictures all over the world, though her New York images have achieved the most international acclaim and have been exhibited in locales around the globe. The talk on December 3 will take place in the Chelsea branch of Barnes & Noble.

Finally, on December 11, 2007, Aperture will present a special evening's seminar for young photography collectors. William Hunt of Hasted Hunt Gallery will guide participants through the first step of collecting fine art photographs. Hunt will examine the transition from being an occassional purchaser of photography to the attributes that define a true “collector.” Along the way, the ups and downs of collecting will be examined, as well as the things a collectors needs to know, and the question "why does it all matter?"
